Marketing & Publicity Associate
North Atlantic Books (NAB) is a leading independent nonprofit publisher in Berkeley, CA. We are seeking a Marketing and Publicity Associate to join the Marketing & Publicity team, helping us promote books in key areas like health and wellness, social justice, trauma and somatics, herbalism, and more.

Overview:
The Marketing & Publicity Associate (MPA) is responsible for implementing 3-4 book publicity campaigns per season and providing administrative departmental support. The MPA fields publicity inquiries and media requests; attends weekly publicity meetings and cross-departmental meetings; liaises with authors and other departments; and pitches books and authors to relevant outlets. Additionally, they organize galley and review copy mailings, report publicity hits, and assist with other administrative departmental tasks.
This position is 40 hours a week. Though NAB is home-based for the foreseeable future, we will give preference to candidates who are local to the Bay Area.
Compensation
Salary is $57,331. We have an excellent benefits package: full health, vision, and dental plan; 401k; paid sabbatical after ten years of employment; and flexible spending plan. In addition to PTO, we offer all employees one paid volunteer day, five grief/bereavement days to grieve any impactful event, and twenty-four paid holidays per year. We currently work half days on Fridays.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement 3-4 publicity campaigns per season, including:
- Conducting media research and developing media lists;
- Writing and designing press materials for assigned titles;
- Liaising with authors to develop and coordinate promotional strategies, plans, and materials;
- Pitching and liaising with media; offering additional support (i.e. supplying interview questions; coordinating interviews; pulling book excerpts; etc)
- Provide administrative support with ARC and review copy mailings; enter publicity hits into the Penguin Random House “My House” portal; and other tasks
- Process review copy mailings
- Support with social media research and select backlist marketing initiatives
- Handle title submissions to trade publications
- Represent NAB at trade shows, festivals, and other outreach opportunities
- Provide support on high-level publicity and marketing campaigns
- Present select titles to the Penguin Random House sales team six times annually
- Assist in working with NAB publicity interns as needed
- Provide feedback on titles, subtitles, and positioning for all titles
- Provide feedback on back cover copy for assigned titles
- Upload digital ARCs to Edelweiss and NetGalley and manage approvals
- Join NAB committees as desired
- Liaise with other departments
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience
- A background in publicity, marketing, or equivalent social media, writing, and admin skills; prior experience in publishing or other media a plus
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to multitask and prioritize within a deadline-oriented environment
- Comfort working both independently and in collaboration with a team
- Excellent verbal and communication skills
- Interest and experience in amplifying diverse voices
- Experience with and/or affinity for the subject areas we publish
- Google Suite, MS Office Suite
- Competence in Adobe InDesign, Canva, Mailchimp, and WordPress a plus
- Familiarity with AP or Chicago Style a plus
- Capacity to receive and store limited quantities of galleys
