Digital Business Manager

Founded in 1974, North Atlantic Books (NAB) is a leading nonprofit publisher in the areas of alternative health, somatics, spirituality, diet/nutrition/natural foods, and martial arts. NAB is distributed to the book trade by Random House. We are located in Berkeley, CA.

North Atlantic Books is currently seeking a Digital Business Manager to join our team. We are seeking an individual with proven sales experience in developing new business opportunities in the digital publishing environment who can lead the efforts to move NAB into new digital distribution channels. The position reports to the Senior Director of Sales and Distribution.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Overview:

The Digital Business Manager develops new income streams and new business relationships for NAB content. Working with the Senior Director of Sales & Distribution, the DBM is responsible for all digital publishing business, including sales forecasting, analysis of client partners, and recommendations of products to put into new formats. The DBM stays abreast of changes in the digital publishing environment and makes recommendations of new distribution channels for NAB content including, but not limited to: ebook distribution, enhanced ebooks and other multimedia content formats, digital audio, digital subscription content delivery, elending library options, online author services (such as workshops and webinars), apps, licensing opportunities, and/or any other online distribution channels/digital publishing products.

Responsibilities:

Develop strategic relationships with organizational partners for distribution of NAB's digital content

Develop new business relationships for NAB content, generating new income streams

Develop and maintain a list of account acquisition targets and manage client relationships

Forecast monthly/annual revenue sales targets, working with Senior Director of Sales & Distribution

Proactively call on new clients, negotiate with, and sign contracts for new distribution arrangements, working with Senior Director of Sales & Distribution and Associate Publisher

Manage content delivery schedules for NAB content, working with Production Department

Responsible for meeting (or exceeding) monthly sales revenue targets, administration of deals, and all analysis and reporting from those income streams

Analyze needs of customers and recommend applicable NAB content for various formats and partners, working with Digital Production Manager and Sr. Director of Sales & Distribution

Develop customer solutions and create internal workflows, where needed, for new revenue streams, working with the Production, IT, and Finance Departments

Develop appropriate messaging for various sales channel opportunities such as pricing discounts and special offers to customers, working closely with the Marketing team

Develop sales and pricing strategies that are channel specific

Stay current with evolution of publishing industry and online retail market and competitive conditions

Represent NAB at trade shows and conferences

Perform other activities as assigned


Qualifications:

5 years of relevant business development/sales experience in publishing or a digital content delivery or an e-commerce company

Bachelor's degree

Proven experience in the application of digital technologies in publishing formats and knowledge of the publishing industry and its supply chain

Knowledge of Internet industry and working knowledge of Internet technologies

Ability to apply new knowledge, technology and procedure to job responsibilities

Experience in managing, forecasting, budgeting and analyzing businesses within the online/digital retail industry

Ability to think and act strategically and tactically

Demonstrated ability in project management, sales negotiation, and revenue generation

High degree of individual responsibility and ability to self manage

Collaborative, team-oriented, able to work across multiple constituencies and juggle multiple priorities

Ability to communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse clients, providers, and staff

Ability to meet key deliverables, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines

Comfortable adapting to rapidly evolving technology

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Organizational skills and attention to detail

Problem solving skills

Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

InDesign experience a plus

North Atlantic Books has intern positions for the spring, summer, and fall semesters. All internships are unpaid and we ask for a commitment of one to two days per week for three months.
