Last weekend, North Atlantic Books sponsored the Tenth Annual Northern California Permaculture Convergence at the Solar Living Institute in Hopland, CA. I was looking for things to do in San Diego when I stumbled upon this event, and it was an incredible gathering of individuals dedicated to developing a culture that cares for its people and its planet.

The focus of the weekend was on building resilient communities, and included keynotes, workshops, and panel discussions with Starhawk, Toby Hemenway, Joel Salatin, Samantha Sweetwater, NAB’s own Juliana Birnbaum (author of Sustainable Revolution), and many other bright and inspiring minds.

For an event with at least 500 people in attendance, I was impressed to learn that nearly all of the power we used was generated by the sun. There were also a few other creative energy solutions, including my personal favorite: the smoothie bike (see slideshow). It was also incredible how little waste was created by a crowd that large, thanks in large part to convergence organizers encouraging attendees to bring their own plates, cups, and utensils, and providing a dish washing station after meals.

We were delighted to meet new friends and reconnect with old ones in our bookstore and reading room, and we look forward to more convergences in the future!

Here are a few photos of the event:
