Talking Story is the extraordinary journey of an unwitting heroine, whose adventure is a testament that the greatest exploration we will ever make is traversing our inner landscape. Such an expedition requires unflinching surrender and a courageous heart. Marie-Rose bravely and fiercely exemplifies both. –Dr. Elizabeth Kapu’uwailani Lindsey, National Geographic Explorer and award-winning filmmaker of Then There Were None
Born a child of the Vietnam war, filmmaker Marie-Rose Phan-Lê finds peace by exploring the spiritual traditions and healing practices of various cultures. Moved by the knowledge that sacred traditions all over the world are disappearing with the passing of community elders who had kept these traditions alive, Phan-Lê traveled to Peru, Hawaii, Vietnam, Nepal, India and China to document local healing practices, in hopes of preserving some of this ancient wisdom. Her memoir details the archetypal heroine’s journey she underwent and the self-discoveries that eventually led Phan-Lê to re-evaluate her life’s purpose and become a healer herself.
Talking Story: One Woman’s Quest to Preserve Ancient Spiritual and Healing Traditions, based on Phan-Lê’s award-winning documentary film Talking Story, invites readers to journey with Phan-Lê as she explores some of the richest spiritual traditions in the world, witnessing different forms of shamanism, spirit-channeling, plant medicine, and divination. The book allows readers to enter into a world that most people will never have the opportunity to explore, by offering an intimate experience of ancient healing traditions and the profound events leading to Phan-Lê’s personal transformation as the journey progressed.
Nothing is more important for human survival than the preservation of shamanic wisdom for radical healing and radical inspiration. This brave, brilliantly written, and exhilarating book by a gifted spiritual pioneer will show you why. –Andrew Harvey, author of Teachings Of Rumi, The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism, and Radical Passion
Marie-Rose Phan-Lê is a brilliant storyteller. Talking Story is a powerful book infused with beautiful transmissions of knowledge she received from healers around the world. It is touching how these healers trusted Marie-Rose so she could share with us what it means to be a shaman, medium, and healer. –Sandra Ingerman, author of Soul Retrieval, and Medicine for the Earth
