Hello friends,

Vandana Shiva is one of the most outspoken and powerful advocates for food justice and biodiversity in the world today. She is a tireless advocate for traditional systems of food production and the rights of women who are often at the center of such work. I have followed her activities with interest for many years, especially her work at Navdanya, the nonprofit that promotes food security and biodiversity and highlights the importance of seed saving and exchange. So it is with great excitement and gratitude that I announce that North Atlantic Books is working with Dr. Shiva to reissue new editions of three of her classic backlist titles and to publish two new titles next year.

Dr. Shiva’s work takes her all over the globe, and we are pleased that she will be speaking at two events in Northern California next month. Our first title with her will be the new edition of Soil Not Oil, which will be presented at the Soil Not Oil Coalition’s inaugural Soil Not Oil Conference in Richmond, CA on September 4th and 5th. The following week, Dr. Shiva will be speaking in Santa Rosa, CA at the National Heirloom Expo, a great event that highlights heirloom varietals and organic agriculture. If you are in the area, please consider visiting these inspiring and informative events.

After Soil Not Oil, we will follow with new editions of Earth Democracy and Staying Alive in October 2015 and March 2016 respectively. In February 2016, we will release Seed Sovereignty, an anthology edited by Dr. Shiva presenting women’s perspectives on food justice and security, with contributors from around the world. In June, we will publish Dr. Shiva’s latest authored work, Who Really Feeds the World, a breakdown of the problems with petro-chemical industrial agriculture and the promise and benefits of agroecology.

Beyond the thrill of publishing such important work by Dr. Shiva, it is especially fulfilling to share such mission affinity between our organization and Navdanya. I look forward to many years of collaboration between The Society for the Study of Native Arts and Sciences, our nonprofit, and Navdanya and Dr. Shiva to nurture better global understanding of these crucial issues.
