Perfect Health for Kids Perfect Health for Kids is an accessible, illustrated guide that provides highly effective health maintenance for children based on Ayurvedic principles. Douillard explains how to identify the signs of imminent illness, how to make the home chemical and allergen free, and how to stock a "Lazy Susan" of useful natural medicines. Appendices provide shopping lists and a directory of national health providers. Child Health Guide Child Health Guide provides the information parents need to make informed decisions about natural healing for their children and the integration of natural treatments into their children's medical care. The book covers the prenatal period through infancy, toddlerhood, and into middle childhood, with emphasis on extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, a natural foods diet, avoidance of toxic chemicals, limited use of vaccines, and treatment of health problems with homeopathic medicines and herbs.
The Homeopathic Treatment of Children The Homeopathic Treatment of Children is indispensible at giving a clear overall impression of the various major homeopathic constitutional types, with detailed outlines for reference at the end of each chapter. Not only does Paul Herscu draw from various sources (repertories and materia medica), he also adds indispensable original information from his successful practice. Understanding your child's constitutional type helps you both understand what stresses are most likely to bring about illness and easily identify your child's ailments when they occur. Childhood Ear Infections Research increasingly questions the safety and efficacy of antibiotics in treating ear infections in small children. Childhood Ear Infections explores the underlying causes of the problem and suggests new strategies. The author discusses diet, homeopathic care, and children's vitamin absorption process. It includes a checklist that advises parents when they should take their children to the doctor and provides specific questions to ask in determining the appropriateness of antibiotics or surgery.
FLU Flu guides readers in treating the flu with appropriate professional care and home remedies. The first part of Flu tells its history, lists its symptoms and complications, and discusses flu vaccines. Part II describes the alternative medical treatments available as well as important measures people can take to build a strong immune system. Part III features methods for flu prevention as well as treatments for children. And Part IV offers information about treatment and prevention for seniors. The Vaccine Guide The Vaccine Guide discusses each disease and its vaccine, providing difficult-to-obtain facts about vaccine reactions. Also discussed are vaccine effectiveness, toxicity and adverse effects, legal requirements, alternatives, and the latest information on the threat of bioterrorism. New to this edition are topics of particular concern to adults, including smallpox and anthrax vaccines, flu shots, and new conditions linked to vaccine reactions.
Doctor Mom's This sensible and parent-friendly guide is a must for any home with small children. Containing real-life treatments for common childhood illnesses and emergencies, it is a handy reference to the healing power of simple herbs, homeopathic medicine, foot baths, and rocking chairs. Part One discusses the foundations of a home medicine cabinet and spells out infant care from breast feeding to immunization. Part Two alphabetizes common illnesses and ailments from acne to warts. New Natural Family Doctor Prepared by experts under the guidance of a practicing doctor, The New Natural Family Doctor answers the needs of the growing number of people looking for safe alternatives to orthodox medicine. Q. What precautions will help keep my child out of the doctor's office this school year?

During these first weeks of school, we have little control over the increased exposure to cold-causing bugs. What we do have control over is our susceptibility to these bugs. In early fall the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. Cold autumn nights bring hints of winter with dry and cool air. Night heaters may dry the air even more and soon the mucous membranes in the sinuses dry out. When this happens the respiratory mucous membranes produce large amounts of reactive mucus due to the dryness. Seasonal pollens and pollutants can also act as irritants to the sinuses, which can cause excess mucus production. As excess mucus is produced this provides the perfect breeding ground for a viral or bacterial infection - thus cold and flu season. The number one precaution for keeping your kids out of the doctor's office is, don't let their sinuses and respiratory tract get dried out!

Q. As the father of six children, what insider tips do you have to share with other parents?

Keep sinuses moist with cool mist humidifiers at night during those early back-to-school days and keep them running right through the winter. My favorite technique to keep those mucous membranes from making excessive reactive mucus is ear oil. That's right - warm oil in your kids' ears while they sleep. Your local natural food store carries a variety of ear oil products. Preventively, from September to March I will drop warm (body temperature) ear oil in my kids' ears followed by a cotton ball while they sleep twice a month. If they catch a cold, I will use a garlic-based ear oil twice a day until they are well - usually a day or two. This again keeps the ears and Eustachian tubes well lubricated, moist, and infection free.

Q. What is the 3-season diet?

Kids do make mucus for a living and because of this we must be aware of the foods we feed them. Mucus-making foods like ice cream and cheese in the spring when it is naturally more wet and moist will only seed the breeding ground for a cold. The 3-Season Diet follows the intelligent harvests of nature. For example, squirrels eat nuts in the winter for a reason - they eat a high fat and protein diet designed to insulate us in the winter to keep us from drying out. In the spring we harvest dry foods like berries and grapefruits that naturally antidote the moisture and rains of spring aptly called allergy season. In the heat of summer we harvest cooling fruits and vegetables that keep us from becoming overheated and dried out at the end of summer. Eating more of what is in season is the basic premise of The 3-Season Diet, which reflects the three primary growing seasons and harvests.

Q. How do the dietary needs of children differ from those of adults?

Kids do not have iron-clad digestive systems; in fact they are much more delicate than adults ,which is more likely the reason why they tend toward tummy aches. Be careful not to feed them heavy foods at night like Mac n cheese and pizza on a regular basis. The digestive power is much weaker at night. Early dinners are way better. The later the dinner the lighter it should be. Instead of feeding them a sugary snack after school, feed them a healthy and substantial meal at that time when their digestive power is still strong - midday. Make sure they stay hydrated with water, not juice. If properly hydrated, a child's resistance to tummy aches and cold is greatly reduced.

Q. What should I look for when selecting a doctor for my child?

Most importantly you must find a doctor who you feel comfortable sharing all your concerns with. If you are interested in natural medicine, you doctor doesn't have to be an expert in that field but he or she must be open and supportive of your interests. Don't be afraid to ask them about natural alternatives - a recent survey reported that 52% of medical doctors use natural medicine for their own personal use. Best place to track one of these natural docs down is a referral from your local health food store.

Q. What Ayurveda principles do your children follow at home?

I have to say that all of the remedies in Perfect Health For Kids were first experimented on my kids for many years. Some of my favorites are: early to bed - if they get run down (and they do), they will be more susceptible to a cold or flu. Understanding each child's unique body type helps us keep on top of their physical and emotional needs. I love the ear oil - it works amazingly well to turn back a cold. I use the medicine chest described in Perfect Health For Kids every morning at breakfast. This is where I give my children herbs each morning depending on their situation. Life with six kids is unpredictable so being able to keep my kids on track with an herb or two at breakfast has been a life saver. Keeping your kids healthy is really not difficult. In Perfect Health For Kids I lay out a very simple and logical plan for parents to not only prevent a cold or flu but to raise healthy mental and emotional children.

When the Game Stands Tall
When the Game Stands Tall:
The Story of the De La Salle Spartans and Football's Longest Winning Streak

Neil Hayes, Photographs by Bob Larson
Preface by John Madden, Foreword by Tony La Russa

Fall 2005, $16.95, ISBN: 1-58394-130-4, Sports Football

By 2002, The Streak, a historic 13-year run of consecutive wins by the Spartans, a high-school football team from Concord, California, that couldn't be beat, was still going strong. In this revised edition of When the Game Stands Tall, author Neil Hayes, who had unrestricted access to the De La Salle team, writes from the inside about the games, the players, and their visionary coach, Bob Ladouceur, who managed to amass the highest winning percentage in football history (.995) by standing for something greater than winning. The book, which also features interviews with major sports figures like Bill Walsh and John Gruden, is a revealing portrait of the coach who believed above all in instilling basic life skills where winning is not the goal, but merely the by-product of playing the game. The Streak had become a national story long before it ended in September 2004. In this revised paperback, Neil Hayes catches up on the lives of the main characters and takes readers through the final tumultuous year. What results is a timeless and inspirational story of struggle, tragedy, and triumph.

Spring 2005, $16.95, ISBN: 1-58394-115-0, Health / Somatics

Through healing himself, he made revolutionary discoveries, culminating in the development of the method that now bears his name. In an intellectually rich and eloquent style, Feldenkrais delves into neurology, prehistory, child development, gravity and anti-gravity, reflexive versus learned behavior, the effects of emotion (especially anxiety) on posture, and most importantly, the inseparability of body and mind.

Wisdom in the Body
Wisdom in the Body:
The Craniosacral Approach to Essential Health

Michael Kern

Spring 2005, $24.95, ISBN: 1-55643-559-2, Health

Accumulations of life stresses -- physical injuries, emotional and psychological stresses, birth traumas, and toxicity -- can become imprinted in the tissues, acting like a videotape that is replayed whenever stimulated. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy aims to resolve the trapped forces that underlie and drive these trauma-based patterns of disease and suffering in body and mind. Wisdom in the Body teaches practitioners to develop finely tuned skills of hands-on palpation and perception to sense the body's subtle rhythms and patterns of inertia or congestion, with the goal of ending trauma and facilitating the expression of the breath of life. A comprehensive introduction to this practice, the book draws on the insights of pioneers like Drs. W. G. Sutherland and Franklyn Sills to explain the key principles about the body's natural intention to heal and how this capability can be encouraged. A valuable resource for students, practitioners, and the lay reader, the book also includes a foreword by Dr. Franklyn Sills.

G.R.S. Mead
G.R.S. Mead and the Gnostic Quest
Edited and Introduced by Clare Goodrick-Clarke & Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke

Fall 2005, $17.95, ISBN: 1-55643-572-X, Spirituality / Jungian Psychology

George Robert Stowe Mead (1863-1933) was a major translator, editor, and commentator on Gnostic and hermetic literature, and thus a pivotal figure linking the late 19th-century esoteric revival to 20th-century art, literature, and psychology. As a young convert to the new movement of theosophy, he served as private secretary to its co-founder, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, and after founding the European section of the Theosophical Society, edited its London journal, Lucifer, for many years. Mead's initial interest in theosophy and Hinduism soon blossomed into a lifelong and wide-ranging engagement with the texts of Gnosticism, neo-Platonism, and hermeticism. His editions and commentaries on previously inaccessible sources became standard works before the First World War and an important source of inspiration for such figures as Jung, Ezra Pound, Yeats, and Robert Duncan. A new entry in the Western Masters Series of concise biographies noting key figures in the Western esoteric tradition, G.R.S. Mead and the Gnostic Quest introduces Mead's life, works, and influences, combining a substantial biography with a collection of his most important writings.
